Baptizing Spiders?

At the end of May I (Don) was invited to preach for the anniversary services of a church in the coastal city of Ferreñafe, Peru.  I preached five messages, including one for their baptismal service.  This took place in an irrigation ditch used for the surrounding cane fields.  After the baptismal service, one of the church’s youth shouted “araña!”, which means spider.  It was a tarantula about five inches long.  It apparently wanted to see what was happening but its curiosity got the best of him.  Someone took the stick it was standing on and threw it in the water.  Did you know that tarantulas float?

We had driven the mobile unit on this trip, which was a blessing to the small church.  We took twenty-three people to the baptismal services in a van with only eleven seats (Peruvians can really pack them in).  Since it has dark windows it was also used as a changing room.  This unit has proven to be a blessing in more ways than we had originally thought.

I went for a “short” interview with the Commander of the Transit Police to pick up our permit to have tinted windows in our mobile unit.  This meeting turned into a discussion about our ministry, the differences in religions and cults, and an opportunity to walk him through the plan of salvation.  I left him with a gospel tract and an open invitation to our church.  Please pray for Commandante Benjamin Rengifo, that God would lead him to the doors of our church and open his heart to His Son.

After months of work we have revised, corrected and added to an old hymnal that missionaries have been copying and using for many years in this country.  We plan to make the files available to whoever would like to print it for use in their own works.  We pray that it will be a blessing for missionaries and nationals and will give glory to our Great God.

Our church continues to grow as we see visitors almost every week.   We baptized two recently in a rented pool.  It will be good to have our baptistery in the new building soon.  We also had a kids’ activity for ages 4-9.  They had a great time of games, music, fellowship and food.  All was centered around the Word of God.   We had good services for both Mothers’ Day and Fathers’ Day in our church.

I was asked to preach at the quarterly leaders’ meeting hosted by Missionary Shane Rice.  The theme was “Our Daily Walk with God as Leaders”.  There was a good turnout from several churches and a good time of training and fellowship.

Great news!  On July 6, Victory Baptist Press will have the paper to print the 20,000+ Bibles that they will be sending us.  They are still raising funds for cover stock and shipping.  Can you help?  You can make a donation by sending a check to PO BOX 766 Milton, FL 32572-0766 with a note that it is for the “Peru Bible Project”.  Also, their mission sells great Christian books and music.  All profit goes into printing and shipping Bibles to missionaries.  Check them out!  Help us get the Word of God into the hands of many souls.

The Peru Bible Conference that Carla and I are hosting is just a couple of weeks away.  Please pray for safe travel for all those who attend and for the Lord to work through a spirit of humility, understanding and learning.  We are praying for God’s blessing for all in attendance.

Building Program Update -  The exterior doors, handrails, security bars and all exterior glass is now installed.  Wooden doors for the 1st floor bathrooms, nursery and the Bible Institute dormitories on the 3rd floor are in place.  Tile is being laid as I write this letter.  The baptistery is already completed!  The first floor should be ready for our anniversary just as we have been praying for!   We will continue as the Lord provides.  Please keep this in your prayers.  We are ready to complete the building for God’s glory so that it can be used for its intended purpose… biblical training to spread the Word of God throughout a lost world before He comes.

May God bless you all for your faithful prayers and financial support of our ministry.  You will never know how many times we have been protected, provided for and blessed by the prayers of God’s people.

Serving Him for You in Peru,

                                  Don & Carla Rich
