No Dust Gathering Here!
Dear Pastors, Praying Friends, and Family,
We have certainly hit the ground running. I just hope there is enough space to write everything in this letter. I would like to start with a wonderful praise. In July, church member Ceci and her mother Nora had an opportunity to witness to a friend of their family who was in prison. Through their witness this young man received Christ! The next week I was able to visit the Penitentiary for the first time. The bunks were concrete slabs with quilts over them. I had to have six different ink stamps placed on my arms before being allowed to enter. Once inside we were able to confirm the young man’s salvation and I was able to witness to his cell mate. He wasn’t ready but the seed was planted.
Also in July Liliana, a visiting cousin of one of our members, was saved in a morning service. After the service that day we baptized four in a river nearby.
On July 13, I preached on the topic of the pastor, the church and the responsibilities of both. After the service, we had a special meeting of the church members. They voted 100% to call the interim pastor José Zamora as the full-time pastor for Iglesia Bautista Calvario! I presented him to the church as “their pastor” the following Sunday.
Thanks to our faithful supporters we were finally able to place tile flooring in the third floor classrooms! They’ve had to endure rough concrete floors which held a lot of dust. Now they can enjoy clean classrooms. We also had to build a temporary classroom for the teens on the third floor. We are running out of space! The building program starts soon!
In July, Carla and I celebrated five years in Peru! They have gone by quickly and things are changing. We now have 3 independent Baptist missionary families working to reach the lost in this area. New missionaries Matt & Sarah Burns and their four children arrived in July. Missionaries Shane & Kathy Rice moved to our area in July ‘06. They have five children now with another due in November. We were here for our first fifteen months alone. Carla and I are the oldest missionaries here (they don’t let us forget it) and we enjoy the fellowship with these two families.
In August we held the 3rd Anniversary services of our church here in Baños del Inca. Carla and I were blessed to have our pastor Bro. Snyder Turner and his wife Marsha with us for this event. Pastor Snyder preached the first night’s service while I translated. The other services were preached by Missionary Shane Rice, national pastor José Zamora and me. We had one saved that week and baptized five on Saturday morning. It was a wonderful week for our ministry.
We have placed five new photo albums on our website. We would like to invite each of you to visit and see how God is working here in Peru. www.rich2peru.com
In our next prayer letter I plan to share more great news as God continues to bless our ministry. There are plans in motion that I just don’t have space to share with you this month. I guess you will just have to wait or come visit us in Peru if you want to know before then.
May God bless each one of you who support our ministry through prayer and finances. You are God’s instruments in keeping us on the mission field and it is very much appreciated.
Serving Him for You in Peru,
Don & Carla Rich
